As new Houses launch (with, dare we say it, quite sexy art presentations), part of the job is also looking back at older collections and making sure they’re up to the same standards and that the works still shine. Last August, in the middle of the night, @katebryan_art + I snuck into Soho House New York ahead of its 20-year anniversary to refresh the art collection. SHNY is open nearly 24 hours a day, so we waited until midnight to start, and hung the final pieces as dawn broke over Manhattan, before carrying on into another all-day install. We relocated two Adam Pendleton’s and our killer Jenny Holzer so they would shine and surrounded them by superstar-peers (Catherine Opie! Scott Covert! Tschabalala Self! Patricia Cronin! More!) We added color (praise be @b.chehayeb + @sadiebarnette) and a breadth of medium (don’t even get me started on the leopard-print terrazzo by Ficus Interfaith or Marcus’ painterly photographs) to breathe some new zing into the space. Since so many of my first projects with SH took me outside of NYC, it’s been special connecting with these existing + beloved properties and getting to blend in some of our new favorite artists to storied sites. Brilliant BTS + installation shots by @bylouisgay // Art lovingly hung by @jonathancurran leading the Anchor + Canvas team. Sustenance and moral support by @justcallmebraveheart + the house team. Mega shout-out to @sara_terzi + @jackdavidlazenby for the push of paperwork, shipment, logistics and curation that went into making this magic happen. And to Kate for being on camera with under 2 hours of sleep to do a video tour of the space + art and manage to speak in full eloquent sentences (couldn’t be me!) before going straight back to JFK. (@zoepaddon and I got aura photos done after the 2-day art bender and my reading was “you are tired” which feels like you didn’t need a polaroid to confirm)
