I AM A FAILURE. So are you. We all are. Failure is what led you to wherever you are today, no matter what stage of your life you’re at. Without it, you wouldn’t know how to survive, how to develop, how grow, how to feel, how to love, how to win. Let’s stay in my lane for a minute. Fitness. When I first started this gig it was all about client success, the wins. Sessions would be about a client completing a set of 10 weighted squats and patting them on the back for doing so. I had studied and understood the fundamentals of training but focused on the positive side of movement, the perfection, the completion. I, of course, was wrong. It takes time, experience and maturity (not my best attribute) to understand that in training and in life, it’s failure that really tells us where we are and allows us to get to where we want to go, to become whatever we want to be. Let’s make this simple. Every day you sit a chair and watch tv and eat and then sleep and repeat. You only really need the core muscles to sit up and then some arm muscles to raise the food and drink into your mouth. One day you rise from that chair and venture to a strange and wonderful venue called the gym. You see a person holding a thing called a kettlebell with both hands in front of their chest, and then do this kind of lunging forward move and you think to yourself “I’ll try that.” You pick up the kettlebell and instantly your arm and core muscles utter a collective “f*#k!” because they don’t know what this is. Assuming the position you perform a lunge. On the way down, your quads, glutes, calves and the connective tissues between these muscles collapse under the weight and cause you to lose balance. YOU FAIL. You’ve overloaded your muscles, ligaments and tendons. Your nervous system doesn’t know what’s happening and is unaware of this compound movement and skill. But you know what? Your failure, repeated over time, will create the need for your body to adapt, your muscles to grow, your connective tissues to strengthen and teach your nervous system how to deal with this movement. You’ll improve. Over time, you’ll succeed in this movement. Continued in comments...
