The Art of Storytelling returns next week, 5/24 (doors 6:30) at @sohohouse #NewYork with a very special guest, artist @bisabutler. @enunn06 and @kengibbsjr welcome Bisa in the midst of her brand new exhibition, ‘The World is Yours,’ currently thru June 30th at @jeffreydeitchgallery. In her quilts, Butler introduces elements of painting and photography. Although her finished works are made entirely of textiles, she approaches the medium from a painterly perspective. Butler's new body of work represents some of her first collaborative quilted portraits. Her subjects are sourced from iconic contemporary photographers like Gordon Parks, Janette Beckman and Jamel Shabazz. "They captured the spirit of their subjects on film," says Butler, "and I strive to reinterpret and add to their vision with textiles. The quilts become a conversation between the photographer, the subject, myself and the audience." Join us as we delve into both Bisa’s story, and the stories behind some of the most brilliant pieces of our generation in her body of work.
