Living as an expat completely rewired my relationship with rest and presence. Here’s what blew my mind: Lesson 1: Sundays are sacred Nothing is open. Like, NOTHING. At first, I panicked. “But what if I need groceries? What about productivity?” Then I realized—this isn’t inconvenience, it’s protection. An entire culture that guards rest like it’s holy!!! Lesson 2: Cafés aren’t offices I watched locals sit for hours with one coffee, no laptops, no phones. Just conversation, people-watching, existing. My American brain screamed “waste of time” while my soul whispered “this is how you’re supposed to live.” Lesson 3: Lunch is lunch, not a desk task You GO to lunch. You sit. You eat. You talk. The idea of scarfing down a sandwich while answering emails is genuinely shocking to them. Food is nourishment, not fuel between meetings. The culture shock wasn’t the language or food—it was discovering that peace isn’t a luxury. It’s woven into the fabric of daily life. America taught me that busy equals important. Living abroad taught me that presence equals everything. These expat revelations became the foundation for what I now teach — that peace is a skill you can actually learn, not just a state you hope for. Comment “✌️” for the first Peace Rebelz episode where I share how I went from 3:17am anxiety spirals to understanding peace as something you build, not something you wait for.
